Over the last few years kydex holsters have become the new standard of OWB holsters. They’re lightweight, matched with extreme durability and close fit, making them an easy choice for someone looking for a multi-use holster. There are now half a dozen (or more) companies that specialize in custom kydex holsters making it harder to choose. Which company should you choose? Is one better than the other? Are they even worth the money?
I’m not going to tell you which company to choose and a I’m not going to say one company is better than another simply because these are custom products and the quality may vary, to some degree, from holster to holster and brand to brand. I will however, tell you about one particular company, and hopefully more in the future, that offers unique options, exceptional quality, and high value. Their name, is KT Mech.
There are three things that make this company standout to me. The main thing is value. The KT Gunfighter holster starts out at just over $40 and offers an extensive selection of options and upgrades. I am a big fan of high value products that also offer high quality and durability. The KT Gunfighter does just that. Many other holsters of the same quality are much more expensive and many of them don’t have any of the upgrades that are available from KT. Another thing that stands out is their selection, as well as the several different types of upgrades that can be used with their holsters. Last but not least, the lead time. KT advertises their lead time to be approximately two weeks which, according to them, is the shortest in the industry. As far as I can find, that is the case. I did a quick search and found that the average lead time for other leading companies is six weeks. Some offer a rushed delivery service for certain products and KT offers this service for an extra charge. My order shipped in about a week and a half and was here within a few days. Last time I ordered a custom kydex rig (from another company) the advertized lead time was six to eight weeks and it took them ten to ship it.
As for my thoughts and the specific holster that I ordered, I am very impressed. I ordered one of the KT Gunfighter’s for my Glock 19. I chose the cheapest color option which is FDE, zero cant, and 1.5” belt loops. Fit and finish are perfect. The retention is just right and does not change upon tightening your belt like some other rigs do. I wouldn’t recommend leaving it in the car during the summer though. I had a friend who did this with his and he has noticed that the retention isn’t quite as good as before. Moving on, belt loops are the most robust loops I’ve seen and can be moved up or down to fit your personal liking. There is a very small gap at the bottom of the holster for drainage that is the thickness of a business card. I poured water in it to test its effectiveness and the water barely dripped. I personally don’t find this to be a big deal, but if one wants, they could easily cut a small notch in the bottom to fix this or leave it in the car this coming summer :).
Overall I think this holster is an excellent choice, especially if you’re on a budget. The quality is every bit as good as the mainstream competitors and I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a custom kydex holster in this price range with the range of upgrades and options this one has. I definitely plan to buy more holsters and parts in the future for testing. Be sure to check out their website here and leave a comment if you have a recommendation for a review. Until next time ~D
